It’s quite common to see bodybuilders/athletes eat the standard, chicken, broccoli and rice. But maybe, they were onto something… with the Broccoli. Let’s take a look at the science:⁣

Muscle tissue grows in two ways as a result of strength training: 1. the existing cells in the muscle fibres grow and 2. the number of muscle cells in the muscle fibres grows. The latter is called hyperplasia: training induces stem cells in the muscle fibres to develop into fully grown muscle cells (@Suppversity). ⁣

Sulforaphane was found to stimulate the development of mesenchymal stem cells. Brassica vegetables, such as broccoli, may well provide our muscle tissue with more stem cells. This can translate to better recovery and growth (Zanichelli et al., 2012).⁣
