Partially Hydrolyzed Guar Gum

“The Under-Utilised Gut Optimiser”
Partially hydrolyzed guar gum (PHGG) is a soluble fiber, also considered a prebiotic derived from Cyamopsis tetragonolobus L., with lower viscosity and the ability to retain a considerable share of the fiber content. It is used on a large scale in enteral feeding, as a dietary fiber supplement, in drinks and foods, and in the food industry in general. However, little is known about the effect of PHGG on the absorption of minerals and its mechanisms, but recent studies have shown the benefits associated with prebiotic intake on mineral absorption, with no damage to the body growth of the animals.

Evidence

Benefits

PHGG increases the concentration of bifidobacterium and lactobacilli species and increases short-chain fatty acids in the colonic lumen [8–13]. It has also been shown to have a positive effect on some medical conditions, e.g., reducing blood cholesterol and controlling blood sugar levels [14–16]. In addition, it was found to be effective in the treatment of acute diarrhea in children and adult patients of intensive care units [17–19]. PHGG has proved to be effective in softening and improving fecal output and increasing bulking capacities (8).

Longevity

  • The intake of PHGG significantly increases ferroportin expression in the cecum, thereby enhancing Iron absorption and preventing iron-deficiency (4).
  • High dose PHGG supplement decreases the level in triglyceride, total cholesterol, LDL and VLDL, thereby improving overall cardiovascular health (5).

Gut Health

  • When used experimentally, PHGG relieved symptoms in constipation-predominant and diarrhea-predominant forms of IBS and improved the quality of life (1).
  • PHGG appears to exert prebiotic properties, by increasing the concentration of intestinal short-chain fatty acids, Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria (1).
  • One study suggests that PHGG can be considered a potential prebiotic compound that may further stimulate the growth of potentially probiotic bacteria or native gut microflora (3).
  • Partially hydrolyzed guar gum (PHGG), improves corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH)-induced intestinal dysmotility in rats (7).

Blood Sugar

  • PHGG is excellent for blood sugar control, since it can decrease postprandial blood glucose by lowering the rate of absorption from the small intestine, by reducing the diffusion of glucose in the lumen (2).
  • In patients with high blood sugar levels and metabolic syndrome, the addition of PHGG to the usual diet improved cardiovascular and metabolic profiles by reducing WC, HbA1c, UAE and trans-FA (6).
